iPad 3. First week of March.

According to John Paczkowski of AllThingsD Apple will announce iPad 3 in the first week of March.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball believes it, and so does Jim Dalrymple of The Loop. That pretty much makes it a fact.

What do I expect?

I’m thinking iPad 3 will have the same form factor as the current model. It will have the same battery life, but with a faster CPU, GPU, and a high-def display. The cameras will be better too.
Will the processor be an A6? I wouldn’t bet money on it. It may just be an evolution of the A5. Four cores seem unlikely to me, because I believe that single-threaded perfomance has a lot of room for improvement still, so two cores should be plenty if Apple has spent the time to get more out of them, which I think they did.
The GPU, just like last year, will be the real surprise. It will be able to power the “retina display” easily. The display will have a 4-times improved pixel count up from the current level of 786.432 pixels to 3.145.728 pixels. This will be the biggest selling point of iPad 3.
I predict that Siri will be a part of it, and that the Smart Covers of the current model will fit the new iPad. The price of the new iPad will stay the same.

As for the iPad 2…
It seems very likely that Apple will keep it around as the “low cost model”, just like they’re doing with the iPhone 4, and 3GS. It will probably start at 299 USD for the 16GB WiFi model. This will pretty much bury the “competition”.

I don’t have any “insight” or “sources” for my predictions, just common sense. We’ll see how that works out.
